Description/Instructions
Field 500 is used for unformatted notes whenever the other 5XX note fields are not applicable. For continuing resources, the following types of notes are tagged 500.
Multiple 500 fields may be input in the order prescribed by AACR2. The "Description based on" note, when used, is input as the last 500 field, unless a copy-specific note is also present. A 500 field with subfield $5 is recorded as the last 500 field.

Notes for variant titles that were formerly given in field 500 with a corresponding 246 field may now be input in field 246 with the specific relationship expressed in subfield $i. If the relationship is too complex to express in $i, use a 500 note.

6. "Description based on" notes. Input a "Description based on" note when the description is based on an issue other than the first issue for serials. Also use the description based on note to cite the latest iteration used for the description, if not the first, for non-electronic integrating resources (LCRI 12.7A1). This note may be combined with the source of title and is input as the last 500 field. "Description based on" notes are not given for regular print reprints.

7. "Latest issue consulted" note. For serials, give a latest issue consulted note when an existing record is updated based on an issue or part that is later than the issue or part upon which the description is based (AACR2 12.7B23). Do not combine the latest issue consulted note with other notes, always give it as a separate note (LCRI 12.7B23).

The latest issue consulted note is used only when the latest issue in hand is not the last issue published or when it is uncertain whether the issue in hand is the last published. The note is not input when the latest issue is already cited in field 362 or in a "Description based on" note. The citation of the latest issue in the 500 note field should assure that the following information, if present in the record, is current as of that issue:
1) Frequency in fixed fields (008/18) and field 310. [Required]
2) Publisher/issuing body (noted in field 550 if the body given in field 260 is not the latest) [Required]
3) Source of acquisition (field 037) including address (subfield $b) and price (subfield $c). [Optional]
When updating an AACR2 record with an existing latest issue consulted note, replace the issue cited in the note with the designation for the more recent latest issue consulted. When converting a pre-AACR2 record to AACR2, delete any existing 936 field and input a latest issue consulted 500 note.

8. Earlier or later volumes separately classified note (LC only). A note is made by LC to provide information regarding changes in the cataloging treatment of a serial (e.g., from cataloging individual issues of a serial as monographs to cataloging the publication as a serial).

In most cases, subfield $5 is used in rare book and special cataloging, but may also be used for institution-specific notes such as those relating to earlier or later cataloging treatment.
