Field 247 contains a former title proper. This field is used when one cataloging record is used to represent all former title propers of a serial or integrating resource. Under earlier rules for cataloging (e.g., ALA), the latest title of a serial was recorded as the title proper and former titles were given in the 247 on the same record with a title varies note. The 247 field is also used under the current AACR2 provisions of "integrating entry" for recording former titles of integrating resources and electronic serials that do not retain their earlier titles on the same record. Notes about the former title history are given in the 547 field. The 547 field is most often used when multiple former titles are described in a single note.
Field 247 is used in the following types of records: 1) records for reproduction microforms that have been "cloned" from a latest entry record for the original serial; 2) records created from preexisting cataloging when performing retrospective conversion; and 3) records created under current AACR2 rules for integrating resources and electronic serials that do not retain their earlier titles.
When field 247 was used in latest entry records for former titles, fixed field 008/34, entry convention, was set to value "1" and leader/18, descriptive cataloging form, was set to blank. When field 247 is used for current AACR2 cataloging conventions for integrating resources and electronic serials that do not retain their earlier titles, the fixed field byte for entry convention is set to value "2" and descriptive cataloging form is set to "a".

First indicator
The first indicator regulates the generation on output of an added entry. If no added entry is desired, input value "0"; if an added entry is desired, input value "1".

Second indicator
The second indicator regulates the generation on output of a note. If a note is to be generated, the indicator is set to value "0". When separate notes are not desired for multiple titles, when the the appropriate language of the note cannot be generated from data in this field, or when complex relationships between title propers need to be explained, record a textual note in field 547 (Former Title Complexity Note) and set the second indicator in field 247 to value "1."
